Description:
Rune’s eyes are a muted, coffee brown. Although unique in a way, his gaze is overall unimpressive. His dull, pink nose is rather large, setting at the end of his long, yet refined snout. His face is strikingly handsome, though with age he will develop a few scars (notably across his nose and a nick in his right ear). Light colored whiskers poke out of his maw in no particular direction, and his muzzle is heavily frosted. Rune has stark white around his eyes, and his ears look as though they were dipped in black paint then dusted with silver.
Rune shows little resemblance to his kin, boasting a handsome spotted tabby pelt, dark marks pleasantly accented by an eyecatching blend of silver and amber hairs. His pelt is thick and short, good protection from both claw and cold without the maintenance of longer fur. Rune, in the end, is a rather fine looking tom with incredibly dense bone, a lean form, and a strong core to tie it all together. His tail is thick and long, and although he isn't as broad as some, Rune makes up for it in other aspects. His paws are large and silvery. His claws are thick and very curved. He has good grip and excellent balance, though he is neither the fastest nor the strongest cat in the valley. His build is dense and durable. Rune’s physical persistence is admirable, though it comes aided with much self-doubt. Some may experience frustration in his more independent spirit and particular ways: a small hill who has convinced himself he's a mountain to the world around him, despite feeling like a pebble at the bottom of a streambed, eroded by the torrents of life.
Rune is far too able to take a hit physically, though no matter how hard he tries, he isn't fast enough to avoid it, and he isn't strong enough to counter it. He is a reliable, worthy partner to spar with, a great opponent to use for refining the skills of an inherently better fighter. He isn't a very good hunter either, though his climbing and tracking skills are exemplary. Unfortunately, those talents are not as necessary as providing food and protection to a group. Although he won't end up a prodigy in regards to hunting or fighting, Rune will be a constant in the valley: a survivor with an enigmatic streak.
Description Summary:
Rune is a tall, amber spotted tabby tom with muted, coffee brown eyes.

Personality:
The first thing one would notice about Rune besides his striking pelt and consuming gaze is his generally approachable air. The tom is most often relaxed in one-on-one social situations, a pleasant cat to be around if he’s the cat to start the interaction, though groups tend to deter him: more work than is worth the effort. Despite his physical independence, he is extraordinarily reliant on the acknowledgement of others, though he often feels this content is an exchange: an action for attention. More particularly, a service. Although some might see it as a hero complex, what drives Rune to such extents is far from hubris. He never could answer the question of, what made his life more important than someone else’s. Self-acknowledgement and confidence is very low with Rune despite his seemingly resolute character, and his overcompensation of cheek and wit does well to distract from this crippling insecurity.
Rune is extremely sensitive to conflict, a natural mediator, though oftentimes lack of notice sends him running quicker than a fox on his tail. Fascinatingly enough, he always comes careening back in the nick of time, against his bravado’s better judgement. Rune never had been a very punctual cat, another avenue to make an entrance and steal the show even if for a moment. Although tardiness often entailed negativity, he still got what he wanted and laced his presence with a sardonic or clever joke, a bow of insolence slapped on top for good measure. Another overcompensation for weak character, his jibes and humor oftentimes masking a deep, debilitating pain.
Rune is an exemplary academic, when he shows up and dedicates himself. His memory is more pictorial, and he is exceptional at discerning visual cues. So excellent that he oftentimes gets overwhelmed and distracted by even the tiniest of details. This can prove to be either interesting or frustrating, depending on the topic and time. Part of his more scattered thoughts leak into his loyalties as well. He rarely takes sides permanently, and never without question. He is an infuriating devil’s advocate, oftentimes taking the contrary perspective out of creating a balanced, respectful conversation. That being said, he also is quite a people pleaser as previously addressed, and wouldn’t question jumping on a bandwagon for a period of time if it fit within his moral compass or his pocketbook. He is a very undecided cat and easy to influence: gullible would be an understatement.
Part of Rune’s indecisiveness stems from his ability to ruminate on his past and analyze possible future outcomes. This is a very intense distraction from his desire to appreciate the present moment, and although aware of the brooding and anxiety he often executes in his most critical moments, he is still unable to control his ever changing perspectives and calculations. Perhaps this is a good thing though, for when he is apprehensive or depressed, it is not for long.
This indecision is quite frustrating to him still. Although he can become irritated when his thoughts and passions don’t align, he always goes to attacking himself: a toxic defense mechanism that has at times protected him from spiting and smiting of others, though is truly, in the end, an overabundant guise to hide dwindling stores. This can put him in a deeper hole. He is prone to be depressive, so like usual he plays the energetic humorous type when he’s hurting. He prefers to be the quiet and analytical type who keeps to himself, but acknowledgement has been well worth the effort and has brought him many relationships he was grateful to entertain. Unfortunately, part of what pushes him away from others (and others away from him) is his insensitivity to loss and hardship, something he is all too familiar with. Rune, although a friendly cat who feels quite strongly, lets things go (oftentimes too far) despite his intuitions.
He lets others walk overtop of him, though in turn can just as easily justify walking overtop of them: except, that same self-deprecation and distaste he is ripe with manages to make him question his worth every step of the way. Rune ultimately stays rather couth with strangers no matter how savage or unruly they may turn out to be. A civilized cat, but also quite keen on luxuries, he carries himself handsomely and always tries to maintain a fairly well-groomed appearance if he’s going to be out in the public’s eye. Though at home and leisure, and when his anxiety doesn’t sharpen his wits, he tends to lose track of time.

History:
Rune has a rather simple history. Born of a mother and father not really noteworthy, his childhood was glum. His family was large enough to warrant responsibility and forced an early independence. All of his relatives were quite sickly and accident prone, or desperate enough to leave. Haar was a good friend while he lasted, but after assaulting one of Rune’s cousins he was cast away. Rune couldn’t remember which one.
After Haar’s actions came to light, a lot of his family dispersed and left the valley, including Rune’s mother and father. He was old enough at the time not to mind, though this initial abandonment planted the seed for some of his darkest insecurities. His Uncle Roan was one of those who stayed behind. He grew to be a close friend and taught Rune all the herbs he knows today, though died experimenting with some herbs in an effort to heal the symptom of stomachache. Lume was also a comforting companion, though she died during kitting. Her single kit, who Rune named Ray, was taken in by a queen named Petal: she had lost all of her kits due to premature kitting.
A stand in father for Ray, Rune and her were inseparable. Petal succumbed to greencough one winter, leaving the two alone with only each other for company. It wasn’t until Ray was snatched by a coyote that Rune truly felt the clutches of loneliness. These losses solidified the overwhelming dread of abandonment that fed his independence and emotional insecurities and his uncanny ability to put people aside for the only one who has ever always been there for him: himself.

WHEN ALL OF THESE PEOPLE KEEP FALLING AROUND ME I WONDER IF I COULD BE NEXT |
RUNE
It was a cold day. Heavy fog made the valley mysterious, damp, and unwelcoming, though that didn't stop Rune from finding breakfast. The ruins he called home were also abode to many rodents. The amber spotted tom had gained some weight through the warmer months, though prey was getting smarter, and leaner too. Muscles rippled beneath the tom's gold-tinged fur as he stretched out on his side, a yawn escaping his maw. The thought of going outside did little to motivate him, but the soft patter of prey's paws made his own prickle with excitement.
The prospect of breakfast was enough to pull him to his paws.
Rune had a pleasing view. His den was a finely placed ledge, and a barred window shed ample light on his stone room. Herbs were littered everywhere, blotting the cold grey with warmer, more natural tones, and built cozily in a corner rest a nest of moss, fur, grass, feathers, and whatever other soft things he could weave together for a better night sleep. He was one of the luckier ones, finding the ruins before another cat did, and the den he made up for himself was albeit messy, very well sheltered and sturdy. For now. Rune thought, looking at the winding staircase below.
A final glance outside send him off for breakfast.
