[googlefont=Libre Baskerville] Birchpaw I will find my way if I can be strong His tail flicked back and forth, upright and proud. It took some convincing but Shadeheart allowed him to venture down to the lakes if he promised to collect water for the waters. While not the task he wanted it was one he would do proudly. Nevermind Shadeheart's other requirement, that Asterpaw joined him.
Glancing behind him to look for the WindClan apprentice, Birchpaw's ears twitched and heart raced. They were two of the few apprentices that had made the journey and likely would remain that way for awhile. While Birchpaw's understanding of StarClan and what it meant to be a warrior was still very much reliant on his nursery day memories. He knew that only leaders could change a cat's name with StarClan's blessing. Neither of the guides had nine lives, they couldn't make the change.
While it bothered him a bit, it wasn't enough to cause angst. He'd looked forward to becoming the first warrior in their new home. Careful to remain within eyesight, Birchpaw continued to wait for Asterpaw before heading onward to the lakes below.

Delicate footfalls and the gentle clearing of a throat signalled the arrival of one of the few Apprentices to join the group that had left their home of before. Asterpaw still wasn't sure of herself in this great unknown but she was glad to have been assigned something to do that was helpful. While she personally hated all the fighting that had come, she knew there was no help for it. She herself had been forced to fight even if she'd rather not do so. The evidence of their escape still shown on her silvery pelt in healing scars along her back. They'd hopefully diminish in time, but for now they were a reminder to the young she-cat of the harsh realities of the world. Having once taken great care and pride in her appearance though, the injuries made the gentle Asterpaw very self-conscious and more shy than she'd ever been before. She'd always been a quiet cat, and it if hadn't been something expected of her she'd have never become an Apprentice in the first place. She hated the fighting even if she understood the need for it. It just...cause her physical pain in her heart to cause harm to others; even if they'd hurt her first. It was just how she was and no one that really knew her had ever understood that. She'd rather support her clan another way, but now there was no option. She had to be brave so she could help those that remained. She had to stand strong in this new world they found themselves in. This new world didn't need a gentle pacifist, it needed Warriors so that was what she was going to have to become. Oh how she hated it, but it was ever so necessary. Shaking herself from her depressing thoughts, she carefully rose her tail to signal a friendly greeting as she spotted the other Apprentice, Birchpaw she believed his name to be, can managed to make her gentle-toned voice loud enough to be heard. "Um...hello there! Birchpaw right? I'm Asterpaw, they told me to come help you collect the water." Oh but she felt so much like hiding away until she felt more like herself. Scars would fade with time, she knew, but that didn't change the fact she hadn't come out of this entire mess unscathed. Hopefully it didn't ruin her chances of making a friend. -- Tags | Helica

[googlefont=Libre Baskerville] Birchpaw I will find my way if I can be strong His tail twitched, excited to see Asterpaw, he nodded when she guessed his name. Being a bit of a busybody, Birchpaw knew most of the names of the cats that traveled with them. Shadeheart remarked it was good to know the names of allies, but that didn't come without a warning. He reminded Birchpaw that despite the sense of kinship created during the journey, they would always be rivals.
Leading his fellow apprentice down what seemed like a path, Birchpaw hesitated enough to let Asterpaw catch up. He kept his distance still, careful not to invade her space too much. Birchpaw blamed his brother Oakpaw on his tendency to lean into his walking companion.
"Are you excited we finally made it? I bet Firelight is happy, I'm glad her wounds healed," His comment stayed joyful despite the grave nature of the topic. The memories of the fighting at the island still sat fresh in his thoughts. All the blood, Firelight pained yowls as the view cats that knew anything about healing offered to help her out. In the rocky outcrop that had called a temporary home while she and the other wounded healed had been the most stressful. Constantly watching over his shoulder, staring back toward the lake, missing his old home.
Flicking his ear to rid himself of those thoughts, Birchpaw kept pace with Asterpaw. Glad to be with god company.

Asterpaw's tail perked up a bit at the warm greeting from Birchpaw, pale blue eyes lighting up for a moment before dimming again at the mention of her clan's guide as it reminded her of how few they were. Not wanting to show her inner pain at all that had been lost, she put on a small shy smile and purred softly at the greeting. She could do this. "I'm...relieved that we won't lose anyone else. It's been a stressful time for everyone so I'm happy that we're going out like this as I think it gives the clan a sense of normality having Apprentices out and about doing work."She winced faintly as one of her still healing injuries pulled a bit and adjusted the way she moved so her gait was a bit smoother and didn't pull as badly. She moved a few paces ahead of her companion and climbed up onto a fallen log. Her eyes fell close and she took the moment to bask in the fresh air and quiet around her as well as the sounds of the nearby prey and insects. She listened, as she used to love doing, to the sound of life around her. It was her happy place and when she heard Birchpaw reach her she opened her eyes again and her smile was a bit more honest and relaxed. She could do this. -- Tags | Helica

[googlefont=Libre Baskerville] Birchpaw I will find my way if I can be strong Birchpaw nodded in agreement; working and offering a helping paw to his clanmates was all he could ask for. Well, aside from his warrior name, of course. While he hadn't put too much thought into it, he did often wonder who would give him his name. Shadeheart did not have the authority to grant him his name change, but then again, no one really did. Firelight was the closest to a leader. She had been considered a candidate for deputy in WindClan. But beyond that, no outright leader was a name or even discussed.
At least not where a young apprentice could hear.
As they walked, he let himself wander. Would it be terrible for them to remain as one for a little bit longer? Lilywish was due any day, and like the rest of them, only a few traveled through the mountains. They were hardly big enough to be one Clan combined, let alone four separate ones. He knew it wasn't his place to question their guides, but he couldn't help but wonder. Would it be wise to break apart as leafbare loomed closer and the territory still seemed painfully vast?
Birchpaw watched Asterpaw as she picked a fallen log to stand upon. He admired how she seemed to feel the world around her. He was very much not like her in that regard. All he knew and trusted was what he felt in his heart and saw with his own eyes. To stop and consider the life around them was beyond him.
Not one to ruin the happiness of others out of impatience. Birchpaw waited for her to join him as they neared the closest body of water. "Now comes the fun part, looking for moss," He perked at the idea of hunting for moss to wet and bring back. Tail twitching eagerly.

Asterpaw hold the line. does anybody want to take it anymore? Asterpaw flicked her tail idly as she regarded her companion quietly. Honestly she'd rather not get wet if she didn't have to, but at least the waters were still and pretty to look at.
Still, she was extremely uncomfortable in this situation and was having to work very hard not to show it. She could work with another Apprentice, she'd done it before and gathering moss was a simple task. So after drawing in a final deep breath for strength she jumped down carefully from her log to stand next to her companion again.
"Alright, let's get to work. The sooner we start the sooner we'll be done. Be careful near the banks though, please, it looks slippery and it's much too cold still to be forced to take an unexpected dip." She meant well with the warning, but she wondered if it made her sound snooty, she hoped not because she'd really like to make a friend.

[googlefont=Libre Baskerville] Birchpaw I will find my way if I can be strong
Birchpaw nodded along with the warning, turning to look at the bank she mentioned. His paw sunk a bit into the soft earth, mushy. A flick of a forepaw loosened the little bit of mud that covered his paw-pads. He didn't need to know the water was cold by first whisker experience. The damp, muddy bank was proof enough.
Bounding several tail-lengths toward a mossy root system. He pulled and rolled several small bundles that he later rolled into one maw size ball. Careful as he made his way back over, Birchpaw edged along the bank until he found a decent spot. A log had fallen near the bank and provided a proper grip for him as he dipped the moss ball a few times to absorb the water.
With the moss heavy with moisture, he glanced around for Asterpaw, curious if she was ready to head back or if she needed help.
